Breaking: Issa Amro Arrested by the PA

On September 4, Associated Press sent out a report with a headline stating that Amro had been arrested for calling on Abbas to resign. This is INCORRECT.  The Facebook post Amro was arrested for criticized the Palestinian Authority for arresting a journalist, Ayman Qawasmi, who was indeed arrested for writing that Abbas should resign. Issa's Facebook post (screenshot below) just criticizes the arrest and calls for freedom of expression.

PA Preventive Security Office Arrests Issa Amro, Co-founder of Youth Against Settlements

The Palestinian Authority’s Preventive Security Service in Hebron arrested human rights defender Issa Amro, the head of Youth Against Settlements. Amro was arrested after being summoned for an interview regarding his criticism on social media of the Palestinian Authority’s arrest of journalist Ayman al-Qawasmi, director of the Freedom News Agency.

"All my writings on social media are part of the freedom of opinion and expression stipulated by the Palestinian Basic Law and are protected by all international laws and conventions," Amro said. "My arrest will not affect my defense of human rights and the rights of journalists to exercise their work freely and without pressure from the government.”

Amro added that there are some parties in the Palestinian Authority that are afraid of the press and activists who call for reform and transparency, as well as those who encourage the leadership of youth in Palestinian society. Instead of arresting activists who demand reform, the Palestinian Authority must fight and arrest those responsible for corruption and coordination with the Israeli military, which is destroying Palestinian society.

Amro is a well known human rights defender, and has been recognized around the world for his leadership of nonviolent resistance to the occupation. He has been arrested dozens of times by the Israeli army on various charges. He is currently facing a trial in Ofer Military Court over 18 charges relating to peacefully resisting the Israeli occupation peacefully. A rare letter in support of Amro was signed by 32 members of the United States Congress and calls for the Israeli government to drop the charges against him. Amro has been recognized as a human rights defender by Amnesty International and dozens of human rights institutions.

People like Issa Amro are the best hope for true peace and hope for both Palestine and the Israelis. He should be released immediately and given the respect that his work entails.

It is quite wrong that Issa Amro has been arrested for standing up for freedom of expression. What hope for Palestinians under Israeli occupation if their own government authority itself denies basic human rights ?
